Two Sokian chess champs for Kyrgyzstan

Thisal Piyumantha and Esandi Nevansa, two talented chess masters from Dharmasoka College Ambalangoda, have left the country to participate in the Western Asia Youth Chess Championships 2023. The tournament is taking place in Korumdu, Issyk-Kul, Kyrgyzstan from June 30 to July 10.

These players were selected based on their outstanding performance at the All Island Youth Chess Championships. Piyumantha emerged as the Under-18 champion, while Nevansa secured victory in the Under-14 age group. Their achievements in the national championships earned them the opportunity to represent their country in this 11-day championship.

It's worth mentioning that both participants have previously won international medals, bringing pride not only to their alma mater but also to the country. Their success reflects their dedication and skill in the game of chess.

The Western Asia Youth Chess Championship and Western Asian Youth Rapid and Blitz Championships are organized by the Kyrgyzstan Chess Federation (Kyrgyz Chess Union) under the auspices of the Asian Chess Federation and FIDE. National chess federations in the region were invited to participate in these prestigious events.
